Description
Pair of Coronations of King George IV (John Whittaker, 1821). A pair of hand-colored steel engravings of the coronations of King George IV. Each of the engravings depicts the order of procession in the coronation of King George IV. In the center of each piece is the order engraved in gold within a shield topped with Prince of Wales feathers. Below are hand-drawn and colored members of the court as they proceed down the aisle. The engravings are set in modern wood and gilt frames.
Printed on the inside of the folio case is: “Dedicated by permission to, / and patronized by, / His Majesty and the royal family, / Part II of the / August Ceremonial / of the Royal Cornation . of . His most excellent Majesty, / George the Fourth. / Presented and published by John Whittaker / (Printer of the Magna Carta in gold letters) / Queen Street, Westminster”.
Whittaker executed ten folios of the Coronation, commissioned by King George IV. They were presented to members of the Court by the King. Later the etchings were reproduced as prints to be sold to the public.
