George III Red Tortoiseshell Tea Caddy

A rare exquisitely 18th century Georgian period red tortoiseshell tea caddy of octagonal shape with beautifully worked solid bobbin molding to the top and bottom edge.   The panels are separated by an unusually tortoiseshell molding.  The caddy has a silver looped handle to the top and silver key profile.  The tortoiseshell caddy opens on a single silver hinge and lock  to reveal a tulipwood facing, and a bone handled single  floating lid. With much of its lining still intact.

The term ‘caddy’ is believed to have derived from the word ‘catty’, which is the Chinese equivalent to just over a pound (Lb.)

The tea caddy was awarded an Interior Designer’s Choice Award for ‘House & Garden’ in association with the BADA Fair, chosen by Martin Hulbert for its “colour,

simplicity, good with contemporary items.”
